Interview with Vinegar Strokes

We caught up with Drag Race UK’s resident SLAG, Vinegar Strokes, and chatted all things drag race. Check it out!

Hey Vinegar, how are you feeling today, this is your second Drag Con right?

So this is my first propper Drag Con doing the booth and all of that, but I did go to the NYC Drag Con for the cast announcement, so we just kind of went over there, waved at people and signed some prints and that was that, but this is the real deal, this one is intense.

What has been the biggest or most unexpected surprise since coming off of the show?

I think just the reaction to it because, even though it’s Drag Race, it was the first UK one so we never knew how we would be portrayed as UK queens you know? we didn’t know if the BBC where going to try and make it more americanised, so I think I was most surprised by just the reaction and how much people loved the show, not in just the UK but abroad too and in the US, so thats been the biggest shock for me from the show

Now I want to talk to you about your runways. I personally LOVED your London Underground look that never came to be

Thank you (laughs)

was there one runway in particular that you really wish you hadn’t missed?

Oh god, I think out of all the runways I wish I could’ve done the wet weather look

rainy day eleganza?

yes that (laughs) I had this gorgeous yellow latex fishtail gown, I was channeling Diana Ross in the 60’s, but she’s singing in the rain with a Mac coat over it, so thats one that I was looking forward too, and that dress was very expensive so more-so (laughs)

If you were ever to return as a future All Star contestant what would you want to show the world that they haven’t seen from Vinegar Strokes already?

more performance. I look at the Frock Destroyers challenge and the bottled water challenge and Snatch Game and go “I would’ve killed every single one of those absolutely, its just the way the cards kind of fell that it was a look challenge, then it was an acting challenge, then a design challenge, but I wish I had the chance to show the performance side of myself. For me im happy to see someone come on stage in a bin-liner, but if they’re giving me a good performance thats what I want to see. I dont care the way they dress or what they make, so if I was to return for All-Stars I would focus on the performance because thats what I would want to see

Our last question for you, as Queer people a word we use with a lot of power is ‘Pride’, what does pride mean to you?

Pride is the power to stand up and say, do youknow what? this is me, and weather you do that in a cardigan and some glitter or you look like me and you’re giving it wig and a full dress, whatever your thing is, thats the power of it, and we are so lucky to have this thing where we can show who we are.

Huge thank you to Vinegar Strokes, Drag Con UK and all of our readers for making this possible!
